The Park Tool School

Bicycle Maintenance Clinics
Central Virginia - 2002

The clinics are taught by Nick Nichols of Rockfish Products - Covesville, Va. The Park Tool School™ is a trademark of the Park Tool Company of St. Paul, Mn.

The Park Tool School™ is an introduction to basic bicycle maintenance. It assumes that the participants have a limited amount of time to allocate to bicycle maintenance, and they do not intend to perform all possible repairs themselves. Participants learn about tire and tube installation, gear and brake adjustments, and other aspects of bicycle maintenance.

The emphasis for this clinic is placed on maintaining the participant's current bike rather than replacing or upgrading significant component parts. This is an excellent class for someone with a relatively modern or brand new bike who wishes to learn about maintenance. Although consumers with antiquated and/or well-used bikes will also benefit from the class, keep in mind that extremely worn out parts do not adjust well and that it becomes difficult during the clinic to take class time to replace them.

The Park Tool School™ gives participants the opportunity to learn and work while being supervised by a professional mechanic. This is something that simply purchasing and reading a book cannot provide. They will be able to ask questions and have their work checked.

Graduates will become more self-reliant when riding and the knowledge will add to their enjoyment of the sport. They will also know more about the bikes and equipment that are available, and will have gained an appreciation for a well tuned bike.

This year, there will be one curriculum available for the Park Tool School™ :

Each clinic will be limited to 4 participants, to insure that the instructor will be able to devote adequate attention to each. You are expected to bring your own bike to work on. If you can't bring one, a bike can be provided. Participants must be at least 16 years old. An exception is made for minors attending with a guardian. The minimum age is then 14 years.

Each participant will need to purchase a Park Tool School™ student manual. This is an illustrated 140 page book that goes with the course. The manual has room in the margins for notes. A handy reference long after the clinic is completed.
